‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ is a story which explores the beauty and authenticity of the North Carolina marsh and creature at its best which only adds to its thematic view and imaginative creation. It’s rich with the set and theme Delia Owens has chosen for a reason to justify unknown, prejudiced victims whose daily problems mount to a plethora of them.
Kya has no choice nor does she want to die when she is
abandoned by all the people she loves. The choice was just a version of many
signs of helplessness and confusion. At a few instances, she allows herself to
drown and hide somewhere else. Its humane enough to hide from problems and
situations. She chose to live a difficult situation and emerge as a phoenix but
fails at a few points which is only fair enough. The writer’s brilliance comes
out with a piece where we can relate and Delia Owens justifies it. Through the
waters of prejudice and negativity, she rows her round boat according to her
life as she starts finding what should be done.
Encapsulated by the beauty of the marsh, its inhabitants and
the life Kya has given to the marsh surrounding her is immaculate as a herself.
But this book isn’t all about Zoology, Botany, her journey to become a
scientific writer. It’s beyond a perfect description and Delia manages the two
sides of the story well enough to make this debut book a success. A perfect,
thriller experience and ends with a different ending which breaks an ongoing
success formula. At a few points, it might seem fast-paced but it is all
justified at the ending or at points we do not see it coming.
Is it a slow-paced, book without much hassle? No, it isn’t a hassle-free
book nor are the characters which have a beautiful and an ugly side to their
life. It isn’t an exact thriller but it is indeed the perfect amalgamation of
thriller and ethology. Ethology too contributes greatly to what makes this book
a highly indispensable one. It has a few answers to our personal questions and
the book answers them in the form of dilemma or the poems by a few unknown
poets including Amanda Hamilton just like herself, unknown yet known.
